How to fix a blocked drain by yourself

How to fix a blocked drain by yourself

February 10, 2019

Is your kitchen sink showing the signs of a blocked drain? Whether it is water pooling at the base of the sink or funny, gurgling sounds coming from under the benches, blocked drains can really be a problem in your kitchen and bathroom.

So what are the best tricks for unblocking a drain on your own? Here is our list of favourite tips to try before calling the plumber out:

1. The coat hanger

Take a standard coat hanger, straighten it out and then, at one end, bend it slightly to make a small hook. Use this hook to unclog whatever it may be that’s causing your drains a problem.

2. Baking soda and vinegar

Mix one-third of a cup of baking soda with equal parts vinegar and pour down the sink. The fizzing of these combined ingredients should help remove anything blocking the drain.

Make sure to leave this overnight for maximum effect.

Variations of the above include:

• Boiling water
• Salt and baking soda (half cup equal parts)
• Washing detergent (especially good for blocked toilets; pour a quarter cup of washing detergent in the bowl, tip in boiling water and flush)

3. Baking soda for the bath

If your bath drain is blocked, mix up some of the baking soda and vinegar and pour it down the drain. After about an hour fill the bath with water. Let the plug out, using water pressure to unblock the bath drain (fingers crossed).

4. Unblocking tools

If you have a blocked drain, using tools like a plunger or drain snake can prove an easy way to solve the problem. It is always handy to have at least one of these tools in the laundry ready in case of any blockage. It is a simple and cost-effective way of unblocking even the most stubborn of drains.
